He stated on X that they were humanitarian workers, denouncing *“Russian barbarity”*. Three other French nationals were also injured in the incident, according to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Friday evening, the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office announced that it was opening an investigation *“for war crimes and intentional harm to the life of a person protected by international humanitarian law”*. These men *“paid with their lives for their commitment to the Ukrainians”*, he praised.
*“A group of colleagues was attacked (…) during a humanitarian mission. On this occasion, two respected colleagues from the team tragically lost their lives and other colleagues were injured,”* stated an NGO in a press release.
While the French nationality of the victims is not specified in the text, several sources had indicated to AFP on Thursday evening that the Swiss Protestant Aid had indeed lost two French employees and had three injured in Beryslav. The organization, which *“strongly condemns this brutal and unjustifiable attack”*, constituting *“a serious violation of international humanitarian law”*, also explained that it was *“working tirelessly to evacuate its injured colleagues safely”*.
AFP later managed to speak to three presumed victims of this attack, three French members of the international Ukrainian legion, one of whom was in France for medical treatment, all alive and well. *“Un grupo de colaboradores fue atacado (…) durante una misión humanitaria. En esta ocasión, dos colegas respetados del equipo perdieron trágicamente la vida y otros colegas resultaron heridos”,* señaló una ONG en un comunicado.
Aunque no se especifica la nacionalidad francesa de las víctimas en el texto, varias fuentes habían indicado a AFP el jueves por la noche que la Ayuda Protestante Suiza efectivamente perdió a dos empleados franceses y tuvo tres heridos en Beryslav. La organización, que *“condena enérgicamente este ataque brutal e injustificable”*, que constituye *“una grave violación del derecho internacional humanitario”*, también explicó que estaba *“trabajando incansablemente para evacuar a sus colegas heridos de manera segura”*.
AFP luego logró hablar con tres presuntas víctimas de este ataque, tres miembros franceses de la legión internacional ucraniana, uno de los cuales estaba en Francia para recibir tratamiento médico, todos vivos y en buenas condiciones.
