Paul was thrilled to have been invited to the convention organized in Paris by the group he works for. However, he was disappointed when he realized, during lunch, that half of the guests around him did not speak French.
The seating arrangements had been planned to encourage interaction between colleagues from different subsidiaries. Paul, who has no contact with his foreign counterparts in his work, felt uncomfortable when English naturally became the common language at the beginning of the meal.
His discomfort increased when he noticed that his three French colleagues were speaking fluently. Paul felt even more frustrated because the friendly giant from Massachusetts seemed like someone he would have liked to communicate with.
To save face and not be completely overshadowed, Paul attempted to make a few remarks, carefully prefacing them with: “*My English is a bit rusty. *” But he was certain that no one was fooled by his shortcomings, and he returned to the conference room in the afternoon feeling ashamed.
