*Jane Birkin By Friends*: a tribute concert at the Olympia this Saturday. Fanny Ardant, Carla Bruni, Etienne Daho, Eddy de Pretto, Lou Doillon, Thomas Dutronc, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Arthur H, Abd Al Malik, -M-, Vanessa Paradis, Catherine Ringer, Alain Souchon… 23 performers pay tribute to the most French of English women. Fanny Ardant, Beth Gibbons (Portishead), and her daughters Lou Doillon and Charlotte Gainsbourg are among the 20 artists performing at the Olympia in Paris on Saturday to bid farewell to Jane Birkin, who passed away in the summer of 2023 at the age of 76.
This show, *Jane Birkin by Friends*, is performed in support of the Restos du Coeur and features an elegant cast of *“friends, intimates, and artists she collaborated with or loved,”* as described by Jean-Louis Piérot, the musical director of the event. This multi-talented musician, in tandem with his compatriot Etienne Daho, tailored the last album, *Oh! Pardon tu dormais…* (2020), of the favorite Englishwoman of the French.
The album consists of around twenty songs and just as many performers, including, in addition to those already mentioned, Dominique A, Carla Bruni, Jarvis Cocker, Marion Cotillard, Thomas Dutronc, Arthur H, Keren Ann, Sandrine Kiberlain, -M-, Abd Al Malik, Mickey 3D, Miossec, Vanessa Paradis, Eddy de Pretto, and Catherine Ringer. Various health issues had disrupted Jane Birkin’s tour, and every time she felt better, she asked her longstanding manager Olivier Gluzman to find her a new date for the Olympia. *“It was absolutely essential to her, and after her funeral, Olivier and Étienne and I said we were going to put on at the Olympia, rigorously, the concert we were supposed to do with Jane”*, says Jean-Louis Piérot.
*“As her musicians, we are all apprehensive. Emotionally, there may be difficult moments, but this concert will allow us to mourn Jane musically,”* concludes Jean-Louis Piérot. Dominique A had written the song *Où est la ville?
* for Jane Birkin on the album *Fictions* (2006), which also featured the Englishwoman Beth Gibbons, the voice of Portishead, behind the track *My secret*. *“Oh! Pardon tu dormais…* is a bit of a family portrait, a cathartic album,”* says Dominique A, charmed by Jane Birkin’s singing, which became *“more and more haunted over the years”*.
*“*Oh! Pardon tu dormais…* is such a personal album,”* Jane Birkin said to the AFP at the time of its release. *“As Serge (Gainsbourg) used to say, when it’s *‘ banal bleu’*, everything is smooth, sublime, we’re not tempted to write.
When there is separation, injury, that’s when we see clouds in the style of William Turner coming,”* she added. Diversos problemas de salud interrumpieron la gira de Jane Birkin, y cada vez que se sentía mejor, pedía a su histórico manager Olivier Gluzman que le buscara una nueva fecha para el Olympia. *“Era absolutamente esencial para ella, y después de su funeral, Olivier, Étienne y yo dijimos que íbamos a presentarlo en el Olympia, rigurosamente, el concierto que debíamos hacer con Jane”*, dice Jean-Louis Piérot. *“Como sus músicos, todos estamos aprensivos.
Emocionalmente, puede haber momentos difíciles, pero este concierto nos permitirá lamentar a Jane musicalmente”*, concluye Jean-Louis Piérot. Dominique A había escrito la canción *Où est la ville? * para Jane Birkin en el álbum *Fictions* (2006), que también contó con la inglesa Beth Gibbons, la voz de Portishead, en el tema *My secret*.

Cuando hay separación, lesión, ahí es cuando vemos nubes al estilo de William Turner que llegan,”* agregó.
